FAQs

WHAT?

I see individuals and families for therapy and counselling.  What this looks like -- the process and goals -- are unique to each person and family.  Therapy is collaborative and compassionate; with the intention to hold space for you to feel and be seen, heard, and understood; and, support you in enhancing awareness, acceptance, and change.

Individual therapy is a space to meet one-to-one and may focus on exploring and overcoming present problems and challenges; understanding and healing underlying issues and past events; increasing your sense of calm, presence, confidence, and connection; and recognizing and building upon your skills and resources, towards meeting your identified goals and hopes for your future.

Family therapy is a space for family members to receive support and work together towards evolving their relationships and communication.

I honour creating safe, accepting, and affirming spaces, and practice from a blend of therapeutic approaches:

EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured therapy that uses bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements, taps/buzzers, or auditory tones) to reprocess memories and maladaptive beliefs from traumatic and disturbing life events.  EMDR is an effective therapy for recovery and healing from trauma, as well as for anxiety, depression, grief, and other distressing life experiences.  For more information, please visit EMDRIA: https://www.emdria.org/about-emdr-therapy/

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an action-oriented therapy to support you in accepting your thoughts, feelings and what is out of your personal control, and committing to actions that improve your life and are aligned with your values and what is important to you; through being present, opening up, and doing what matters.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness is the practice of bringing intentional awareness to, and grounding ourselves in, the present moment -- being aware of our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, behaviours and surroundings, in the present moment without harmful judgement.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) supports people to learn and practice skills, build strategies and create new behaviours towards building a life they experience as worth living, through acceptance and change -- accepting situations as they are and working to change what you can.  DBT Skills include Mindfulness, Emotion Regulation, Interpersonal Effectiveness and Distress Tolerance.

Narrative Therapy

Narrative therapy is a collaborative, non-blaming and non-pathologizing approach, that centres people as the experts in their own lives, and views problems as separate from the person.  Narrative therapy recognizes that all people have many skills, values, and capacities to create change and re-story their lives.

Solution-Focused Therapy

Solution-Focused Therapy or Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is a strengths-based approach that focuses on creating solutions in the present towards future goals.

WHO?

I see adults and youth (ages 12+) for individual therapy, as well as families seeking support in their relationships and communication.  (My definition of family is broad and inclusive; I see any interested members of a family as defined by them).
